Mar 12, 17 AMEB Online Theory Exams

AMEB provides online written exams in Theory, Musicianship, Music Craft and Speech & Performance Theory. Exams may be purchased online to be completed in the presence of a teacher or parent over the age of 18. Applicants are assigned an account where students have 12 months to view tutorials and complete unlimited practice exams before they complete their official exam. Not only can you complete these exams in your own time, but most online exams (practice exams and formal exams) are automatically marked and results are returned instantly.

Higher-level exams are manually marked by members of the AMEB online examining panel, and candidates receive their results within 3-4 business days. The results are usually sent to your teacher (or the account of the person who created the enrollment), and email notification also provided.  All music examinations contain 100 marks.  To pass a graded written examination, candidates need to achieve a minimum of 65/100 or 65%.

The AMEB grading system for written exams is, as follows:

  • 95-100 marks = High Distinction (A+)
  • 85-94 marks = Distinction (A)
  • 75-84 marks = Credit (B)
  • 65-74 marks = Pass (C)

From Grade 4 Theory of Music and Grade 4 Musicianship onwards, students will need to spend significant time studying for their written exams.
